C1 – Art & (My Life)

My first semester taking an art class I’ve found in my studies and artistic projects an impact on me that heavily influenced me to perceive in a more creative manner. All the SOA artists have introduced me to new types of art works such as sculpting and paintings a fascinating exhibition. Their usage of story-telling brought a deeper connection with their own art that I aspired to bring with mine. From our first project plaster casting all the way to our final last student choice I’ve learned how opening yourself to past and future experiences allowed for a sense in the direction of my ideas to represent what I find passionate about. I’m proud to have learned to stick with the process with each new project and gain the trust in me to keep going although I would run into mistakes. Ultimately, I aimed for my end results to reflect what I wish to showcase whether it was graffiti writing, sketching in the garden or creating a vlog.

My experience with art began in elementary school but have slowly regressed towards the end of my high school years until recently. I’ve taught myself to reimagine myself with art during my art course at the university. I’d say having time to paint and sketch isn’t something I do as much now than when I was a kid. Solely with art sketches and paintings I found my aesthetic point through many trial and errors with the usage of different tools to reach a pleasing piece through my own eyes, however, I found ways to develop spatial thinking in my classrooms and assignments ranging from psychology to statistics. My understanding of art has evolved as kid as now I view my academics and social life interactions a work of art. It all comes down to the mindset and what I’m observing that be meaningful in my own life through the different thought processes I dive into. I assure I authentic and displays expressions of joy, love and peace that are true to me that thrive from start to finish during any of my art filling experiences.

My direction of career choice I took in psychology I make tons of observations that expands through creativity to aid in my success. I believe having an optimistic outlook benefits me in discovering more research topics to uncover answers of unsolved issues such as mental disorders or human behaviors. I found with all my mid-level psychology classes they all have variety of applications that utilize statistics, and forms of observations on human behavior and physiological. Stepping out of a textbook and applying skills of clinical psychologist to my surroundings pushes me to unveil greater truths about humans themselves. Studying the natural world of humans takes patience just as art cannot be forced and magically appear of out of nowhere. My understanding of art lives fluidly with me now as I undergo variety of projects that began from scratch or by picking up new opportunities to observe new methods of knowledge that will carry onto my existing set of tools of creativity.

Overall, I am pleased with being part of an intro art course here in CSULB as it taught me to be comfortable with taking risks on how we express ourselves with art and intergrade aspects into our daily tasks. The choices we make to manage our times reflects how deeply we want to prosper and keep developing essentials skills to put into our portfolio that further us when graduating from the university.

WK B10 – One More – Graffiti

My first time doing the activity was exhausting and a tone of time having to move the spray can up and down and re-shaking it. It was certainly getting to know how the paint sprayed depending on the angle and depth holding the spray can. My weaknesses included being messy and having to do too many layers cause the paint was too much. However, my strengths including being able to draw my ideas as simple as my name and I enjoyed it enough to redo it a second time but a bit differently.

My goals for my 2nd attempt, not practicing as much either was to redraw my name in a different font. I was unsure what style to go for so I just went all in and saw as I went. I surely gave me excitement knowing I didn’t have to follow a certain style but was prone to a lot of trial and error. Lastly I almost finished 2 full cans but was worth the attempts till I got a right enough. The style was cut down but I was aiming for a more sharp look and less thickness.

I felt my 2nd attempt contained completely different angles but kept the same color scheme of blue, gray, and white. I felt it wasn’t my best work but I felt it was worth for my last project that reflected mostly how I enjoyed the process and kept determined that resulted in a final product I felt satisfied with.

Wk B9 – Finger-Painting

This was my first-time experiencing finger-painting probably since I was a little child. The whole set up was great having to select my pallet of three different colors then seamlessly moving my fingertips throughout blank space. It was harder than I expected since the paint wouldn’t smudge across fully and I would have to do bits by bits. It was a mess using all types of finger gestures that required a ton of effort on my part.

I feel the experience was surely frustrating since what was being painted on the paper wasn’t going smoothly but I learned to enjoy it which led to it being liberating. There was no boundaries of where it had to end and the depth of detail it had to contain just a continued motion of paint till the bigger picture began showing. Once I had a decent number of layers it began forming waves, streaks, fingertips and big puddles of paint.

However, it felt I was getting closer with my art than any other painting I’ve done since I literally was the brush and my sense of direction had no limits. I definitely would draw more finger-paintings with the thought of freely expressing my emotions deeper with types of touches and color tones.

Wk B8: Vlogging – Emilio Guzman

What you were going for in your video:

Being my first time vlogging I was aiming for a direct point of who I am and what my interests are. I try to maintain a simple set up with the focus on me with a normal background. I had set up to deliver an intro, some casual content about what I do and an outro. I felt getting to the point made  for an easier delivery about my message. Overall, the goal was to set myself up for a general audience and have a quick glimpse into my world.

Did you accomplish it?

I felt I did a decent job displaying my goals and accomplishing the task of introducing my world and couple aspects of my life. Getting in front of a camera can be uneasy at first but setting up a plan and bullet points that I wanted to mention got me on track to producing some worthy content.

What would you do differently next time?

Next time I want to interact more with the audience to feel more approachable and relatable. As well as moving around different environments to represent the main ideas I want to get across. Practicing will definitely improve my quality and help gather new ideas how to organize my videos.

Do you think you’ll ever vlog again?

I believe I will vlog again soon as it’s a new perspective on life to make a difference. Putting myself out there to feel uncomfortable will build deeper connections with others and myself hat I can get onboard with. I think creating a plan and investing time to it will produce results that will open endless opportunities.

Wk 7 – Graffiti Writing

It was my first time doing any sort of graffiti writing and off the bat it was certainly worth experiencing. I had bought three different color cans, white, teal, and gray. When doing my first sketches on paper I was going for some simple bubble letters and then outlining it after. I began with spraying the background grey so it wouldn’t be just plain old cardboard. I grabbed the white can and first tried spraying from a foot away and wasn’t as sharp. So, I got closer and it outlined better using the white spray can. At this point it smelled like a ton of paint so I grabbed a face mask. I then finished outlining the white and added some teal in between for some letter thickening. After, I went over the white outline again and made sure it was readable. I then tried seeing different spray techniques which I found how to do some short burst that gives a mist effects as well as  some drips. My finish art piece was decent enough or me, also I would reattempt it in the future to try to improve my skills.

Week B6: Environmental Portrait

What you were going for?

I was going for the person I am outside of school which involves getting out into different locations and taking in the moments of open air. The first photo was during my trip to New Zealand, I had taken a trip to visit my girlfriend but during the whole travel experience I became intrigued in finding a deeper connection with outside cities far from home. This year alone I’ve taken road trips to San Francisco and Rosarito, Mexico. Discovering different environment is a hobby I grew passionate about as going to the beach or to a music festival. Similar to the first photo, the second photo captures the type of conditions that keeps me motivated such as cold and crisp weather looking out into the beauty of nature to feel free once in a while. The rush of going up into the mountains and feeling snow pile up next to you is breathe taking and worth going out into nature.

How successful you think you were or were not?

I think for what was captured represented my vision well as well as how focus I am to keeping my joy for traveling a hobby for a lifetime. It genuinely feels during that moment the picture was taken I took time and effort to reach that spot in life to obtain my goals.

What you might do different next time?

For the next time during my new travel experiences I will represent myself with more aspects of different cultures and how I am able to interact with other people during those moments. I’d like to put myself more out there by fusing my worlds with others and taking risks to get out my comfort zone that dives more specifically into what I love about traveling.
